O Saigon, my beloved city,

I feel like a stranger when I returned on a rainy evening.

Raindrops like cold tears filled my soul with sorrow.

The city had changed its name to something longish, unnatural,

and the street also followed. 

I stood looking at the city, feeling forlorn and sad.

O Saigon of yesteryear, with miild sunshine and gentle clouds, 

O Saigon of those days with the streets so lively and beautiful, 

with poetry-inspiring áo-dài dresses teased by the the wind.

Where are you now?

O the Saigon in my memories, 

a lively and peaceful city,

with you, my darling, returning home from school, 

on the memory-filled street strewn with tamarind leaves. 

Oh, reminiscing about the olden days. 

I bowed my head to hide the hot tears.

Old friends, old town

are now new acquaintances.

Saigon not just had a different name

but its character also drastically changed.

My heart filled with melancholic regrets,

in a swamp of sorrow.

O the friends that I knew, 

the city that I grew up in, 

is now just a faded dream.
